Here is what you need to know if you’re planning on visiting a loved one incarcerated in Gwinnett County Jail or if you need to post a bond for their release.

Detention Center Information

Located at 2900 University Pkwy. in Lawrenceville, the Gwinnett County Jail is part of a four division complex that also houses the Sheriff’s Office, the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, and the Gwinnett County Magistrate Court. Better known as the Gwinnett County Detention Center, the jail is a direct supervision pretrial detention facility holding a maximum of 2,675 inmates. Maximum security inmates, medical inmates, and disciplinary inmates are housed in the new Wimberly Tower building, with all other inmates residing in the original facility. Another tower is in planning to add more space for additional inmates at a future date.

Contacting Inmates

Inmates at the Gwinnett County Detention Center can be contacted by phone or by mail. Phone calls are all collect with several options for payment. You may choose to start a pre-paid phone account for yourself, add funds to an inmate’s account, or be billed monthly for calls made to an incarcerated loved one. Mail is limited to postcards that meet specific criteria, but some magazines and newspapers are also acceptable.

Visitation

The Gwinnett County Jail allows visitation every day except for Wednesdays and Fridays. Children under the age of 17 may only visit on Saturdays and Sundays and must be accompanied by an adult. You must present a valid ID at the time of your visit and arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the time of your visit. Visits last for a maximum of 30 minutes and are to be arranged by the inmate on your behalf. Remember: you will not be allowed to bring in any food or drink; no purses, bags, or strollers; and no contraband items such as cigarettes or alcohol. Be aware that you will be subject to a pat-down search before visitation will be allowed.

Posting Bail Bonds

Bail bonds may be posted only after booking and identification of the inmate has been completed. A new detainee will be placed in a holding area where they will be allowed to make collect calls to arrange for release with a bond posted from an outside individual. Because the bond amount is determined by the court system, the personnel at the sherriff’s department cannot negotiate a lowered cost for bail. If you are unable to post the bail amount in full, you may choose to use a bondsman or bail bonding service to post the bail for you. These services can file the necessary paperwork for you and offer payment plans, so you can release your loved one now and pay later.
